’11 SLIFF BUZZ: To Be Heard
Short review:
Power Writing to create that safe place to be in/out of the hood. A student shouts “Poetry is rehab!” – a teacher inspires students to “pass the test of life… at a very special level, far beyond their subsistence” and hopes “to produce literate, ethical, politically motivated students. People who are going to be conscious, people who are not going to settle for the way the world is but rather to use their information to change the world.” —> A
’11 SLIFF BUZZ: The Hammer/Hamill – the movie
A short review:
Based on real events (Matt Hamill a.k.a. The Hammer)… An irresistible grandfather guides his grandson – you’ve got to wrestle with life (à la Jacob?):
“If you don’t believe in yourself, I am not going to…
Why do you think you have the right to feel sorry for yourself? The world can be cruel no matter who you are. No one is exempt from that. Roll up your sleeves and get back to work…
Don’t ever give up!”
The fierce advice jolts us forward… yes, our heart will keep pounding! —> A

Criminal Language: “Roadkill/Collateral Damage/Trash”
If you think the system is working, ask someone who isn’t, and if you don’t go fast enough, at least look elsewhere…
An excerpt from Beyond Belief (Against the Weapons of Mass Distraction):
(YOU WILL) KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW
“I believe in America, I believe it exists” – Stephen Colbert
In the dictionary, everything is defined by everything; a tautological closed system where you don’t have to be a linguist to sense that you don’t actually learn anything. At times, our vocabulary goes on a rampage: “roadkill,” “collateral damage,” “trash,” “(human) refuse,” “bums.” We learn to become comfortable with our blindness. Language, as Barthes has said, is tyranny, but it is also criminal containment, segregation and avoidance.
JEWish IDentity (whispered)
by Roger Cohen in the New York Times
“The lesson is clear: Jews, with their history, cannot become the systematic oppressors of another people. They must be vociferous in their insistence that continued colonization of Palestinians in the West Bank will increase Israel’s isolation and ultimately its vulnerability.”
Reminds me of my video piece “Say I’m a Jew” & its installation “JEW.”
David Servan-Schreiber: 1961-2011
His last text/book: “We Can Tell Each Other Goodbye Several Times.”
The first question raised by my state of health: “does my relapse damages the credibility of the anticancer method?“, I answer categorically not.
Firstly because I am not a scientific experiment to me alone, I am one clinical case among others. Scientific experiments deal data of thousands, even tens of thousands of clinical cases. The considerations, research, the findings, the evidence I’ve presented in Anticancer are not based on my personal experience, but on the scientific literature.
“What matters most is neither one particular technique nor one particular application. There is no secret, no magic password that can cure cancer…
What seems essential to the mobilization of the body’s forces is to renew contact every day – with sincerity, benevolence, and calm- with the life forces that vibrate within our bodies. And to bow to it.
… There is one thing I’m certain of. I will never regret living as I live today, because the health and the greater awareness that this personal transformation has brought into my life give it a much greater value.”

Use Your Head & Keep your Life & your Head = Helmets + Visibility
Having had many close call encounters both on a bicycle and in a car, I am NOT afraid to look like a Xmas tree while biking.
Having met someone with a hole in his head and his speech impaired because, the one day his car was in the garage, he rode to work on his bike without a helmet, I don’t care much about that kind of wind in my hair anymore…
I have also had people die from head concussions by rollerblading without a helmet.
On the top picture, notice the lights and reflectors (all around) on the helmet.
With LED lights there is no excuse…

A friend recently wrote me:
I have had 13 friends and family of friends hit by cars, and one who hit someone who rode their bike directly into her path while driving, 3 died, all not wearing helmets. My friends who were wearing helmets all survived.
I have had close calls as well and one fall when my helmet did its job.
