Harry Brod: ‘Working From and Against Privilege’ (at Webster U.)
Harry Brod
What would motivate those from dominant social groups to join as allies in struggles for justice with those from correspondingly subordinated groups? How can identities of masculinity, whiteness and heterosexuality become the foundations to undo the structures of social privilege they embody?
Harry Brod, author, scholar, and professor of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Northern Iowa, will address these issues when he visits Webster University April 5.
Date/Time: Thursday, April 5, 6 p.m.

Admission: Free and open to the public
Brod is widely recognized as a founding figure of the field of men’s studies, also known as masculinity studies, which applies theories and concepts derived from women’s studies to examine men and masculinities, and as a spokesperson for the pro-feminist men’s movement.

She is featured in the book “Refuge in Hell: How Berlin’s Jewish Hospital Outlasted the Nazis” by Daniel Silver.

To meditate has meaning only if you have the same attitude towards it as you have towards going to the toilet in the morning. You don’t do it to get enlightened. You do it because it is natural, like when you wake up, you go to the toilet, you brush your teeth, you take some water in your mouth, you move it around, and you spit it out. It is totally normal.
You have nothing to do at four in the morning. If like most people you have neighbors, you cannot make any noise. If you are sane of mind, you don’t turn on an artificial light ; for this would be an insult to beauty. You don’t want to burn down your house with a candle, therefore you don’t light one, therefore you cannot read. Nor will you put on any music because the neighbors are psychopathic. Your dog is still sleeping, your wife lives with the fantasy of having a husband. You have time on your hands. What can you do ? Nothing! So, you remain still. – Éric Baret
On fait de la méditation seulement si on a la même attitude que quand on va aux toilettes le matin. On n’y va pas pour chercher l’illumination. On y va parce que c’est naturel, quand on se réveille, on va aux toilettes, on brosse ses dents, on mets de l’eau dans la bouche, on bouge tout ça et on crache. Tout à fait normal.
Il n’y a rien à faire à quatre heures du matin. Si comme la plupart des gens vous avez des voisins, vous ne pouvez pas vous permettre de faire du bruit. Si vous êtes sain d’esprit, vous n’allumez pas la lumière; ça serait une insulte à la beauté. Vous ne voulez pas brûler la maison avec une bougie, donc vous n’en allumez pas une, et donc pas question de lire. Non plus, pas de musique à cause des voisins psychopathes. Votre chien dort encore, votre femme vit avec le fantasme d’avoir un mari. Vous avez du temps dans le mains. Qu’est-ce que vous faites? Rien! Vous restez tranquille. Il y a très peu de chances que sera un être spécialement éduqué ou honnête. Ce sont les gens qui ont des grands problèmes intérieurs et personnels qui aspirent au pouvoir.
Un homme heureux ne se trouve jamais au pouvoir.
Mais si une personne qui est malheureuse, qui est porteur du malheur se trouve au pouvoir et qui porte en soi des problèmes très profonds émotionels, psycho-physiques, intellectuels, esthétiques – alors c’est le malheur pour tout le monde. Les gens ne comprennent même plus où le malheur s’arrête, où il commence.

Le mal et l’agression existent dans beaucoup de gens. Il y a des peuples entiers et des groupes de millions de gens qui sont prêts à participer dans des conflits armés. Il faut tout d’abord penser à eux, des gens qui veulent du sang… Va, va faire la guerre contre les hommes d’une autre foi, par exemple. Des millions de gens veulent la guerre malheureusement.
